Blunt Force Trauma: Interview with Max of Cavalera Conspiracy, Ep 132

Episode 132

Two of the more influential artists in the world of thrash and acid metal back in the 1980’s were brothers, Max and Igor Cavalera. Max founded the band Sepultura, a Brazilian Metal band in 1984, and for nearly three decades, they rocked Brazil, Europe, Australia, and the rest of the world.

On August 16, 1996, while Sepultura was on the Monsters of Rock tour with band like Ozzy Osbourne, Paradise Lost, Type O Negative, Biohazard, and Fear Factory, Max heard the news of his step-son’s death and abruptly left the tour to be with his family. This was the beginning of the end with Sepultura for Max. A year later, Max was back on stage, but it was with a new band, Soulfly.

After ten years of silence, Max got a call from Igor and they found themselves working together again. On August 17, 2006 during the 10th Annual D-Low Memorial show, Max reunited with his brother Igor, whom had not been on stage together since 1996. They played some of their originals written for Sepultura.
Max said that Soulfly is still very much an active band, will be releasing their 9th studio album in spring of 2012 and will also go on tour beginning in Australia.

In 2007, Max created another band called Inflikted. Max and Iggor decided on a new name that represented their family and called it, Cavalera Conspiracy. This new band was a newer sound, which Max describes as his “roots” of metal, a “super metal” as he called it, that combines the sound of 80’s trash and death metal and the modern sound of today’s metalcore. Their debut album, “Inflikted” was released through Road Runner Records in 2008 and in their first week, ranked No. 72 on the Billboard 200 and ranked even better in countries like Australia, Finland, Austria, Belgium, and Germany.

Early 2011 was the release of Cavalera’s sophomore album entitled, “Blunt Force Trauma”, an in your face metal album that digs deep into one of Max Cavalera’s favorite topics, and that is his love for history. Songs like Genghis Khan, Warlord, Burn Waco, and Rasputin were influenced by his love for history. Events in history were his inspiration for his lyrics. Knowing the background of a band’s story behind the music and the reason for their lyrics, but it also gives the artist a new found respect.

Cavalera Conspiracy ended their 2011 tour in November, but this is not the end. During the off season, Max and Igor will be hard at work writing new material and will be headed back in the studio for their new album sometime in 2012.

Welcome to Episode 131!

Located out of Holgate, Ohio, NotForgotten is Frontman - Kevin Leach, Drummer - Brandon Tijerina, Bassist -Danny Leach, and newest member and Guitarist – Adam Delaplane.

A lot has happened since my last interview with Notforgotten back in 2009. Since then, NotForgotten has undergone a lot of changes including the new addition of guitarist, Adam. Not only have they expanded, they’re sound has matured and transformed from something that was forgettable, to a something absolutely worth remembering.

One of their fan favorites off the new EP entitled, The Other Side, is a song called, “You’ve Got Someone to Hold You”. They had an idea to release this song on Valentines Day, and boy, it turned out to be the best idea thus far. Not only is it one of the best songs, it surprisingly caught a lot of attention and has catapulted their popularity and has grown their fanbase.

While this EP is only four songs in length, it is but a sample of what’s to come. The band has been traveling across country and they’re headed to Los Angeles to shoot their first music video. And, they are nominated for Best Rock Band and Best Pop Artist.

Hold Me Down: Interview with LoyalHollywood, Episode 128

LoyalHollywood is a 24-year-old unsigned R&B, Hip Hop Songwriter, Producer, and native of Kansas City, MI. Now residing in the city of his dreams, Hollywood, CA, LoyalHollywood met up with childhood friend, mentor, and R&B singer Cris Emanuel. Wasting little time, LoyalHollywood went straight to the studio in pursuit of his life dream of becoming a recording artist.

At the young age of 8, when other kids were out playing basketball or playing video games, Loyal was already working on his career goal as a musician and hard at work producing his first record in his uncles home recording studio. Even though this album probably wasn’t going to be a Top-40 chart stopper or even make it to the Billboard’s top 200, this was a pivotal moment in Loyal’s life when he discovered that a career in music was where he belonged.

Today, as an unsigned artist, LoyalHollywood is already on his way with a production of his first full length CD. He’s released his first music video called, “Hold Me Down ft. Cris Emanuel” directed by Delvon Simmons. And, if you think that wasn’t enough for a great start, Loyal’s already in line to release a second music video for his fan favorite song, “Wake up, Go to Work”, a song about the daily struggles of the modern working class, living in a monotonous world of the “9 to 5” job.

Busting the Myth: “They’re not on the radio, so they must not be that good.” False. Mainstream radio IS NOT a reliable measurement of how good an artist is. It just means, they have deeper pockets.

Since March 2009, The Great Unknowns Presents has been through a lot of changes. We are more selective about who we play on the air, so that it mirrors what you would hear on a Top-40 radio station, which is why we call this episode, “Mainstream Alternative”.

J-Punch and Dave Moonshine was created by former veteran underground DJ, Justin (J-Punch) of Washington, D.C. and his co-writer, Dave Moonshine from Los Angeles.

Even though the two artists do not reside in the same city, the distance does not take away from their creativity. Justin and Dave write and create music year round, but meet once a year to collaborate their ideas and record the final cuts for their music. In September 2011, the duo will be working on their upcoming new EP that is expected to be released in late 2011.

A year ago, J-Punch and the Moonshine debut their first CD called, Stick Figure Guy. The CD is full of smooth House and Ambient elements mixed with a sort of Alt-pop and Alternative rock. Their unique sound is just what it is.

Music from Stick Figure is so unique it is difficult to compare them with anyone else in the industry, but they do have a familiar sound. More importantly, it’s both likable and addicting. If I had to compare J-Punch and Dave Moonshine with someone else in the industry, it would have to be The Cure, Depeche Mode, Howard Jones, and 6 Feet Underground. Throw them all in a tall wooden bucket and churned them into a soft butter and mix it with some Enigma (without the Gregorian chants).

If you like the sounds of the 80s and you enjoy house, you’ll love J-Punch and Dave Moonshine.

NEVER FORGET 9-11 Tribute: The Great Unknowns Presents LIVE, 2.2 Ep 124

10 years ago, this country witnessed one of the most tragic events since December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. 19 members of the al-Qaeda hijacked commercial airliners that were used as weapons of mass destruction to attack the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, VA.

As people were fleeing for their lives as the World Trade Center towers were about to fall, fire fighters, emergency medical technicians, port authorities, and other rescue volunteers rushed in to save lives. Many of those first responders did not come out alive, but their actions saved hundreds more. These are the true heroes of 9-11 and they deserve to be remembered.

This 9-11 Tribute episode is a collection of music created in honor to those who lost their lives, lost loved ones, and had been deeply impacted from the events of that fateful day.

Beu-tiful: The Beu Sisters Interview with Mikey Jayy

The Beu Sisters aren’t amateurs when it comes to music. Previously known as a teen pop sensation, they sang light-hearted songs targeting a younger audience. They were widely known for their music in Disney films like, Home on the Range, Ella Enchanted, and Lizzie McGuire. Their song, “Catch Me If You Can” was featured in the hit romantic comedy, How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days. Their music was also featured in television shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gilmore Girls. They were featured on MTV and toured with musical acts like Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, and many others.

Almost a full 10 years later since they debut their first album, Decisions, they’ve separated themselves from the majors and opened their own studio near their home in Florida to produce and release new music independently.

Earlier this year, Candice, Christie, and Danielle Beu released a six song EP called, Beu-tiful Vol. 1. They are soon to release Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 will be released later this year. I haven’t heard all of Vol. 2 and Vol, 3, but you can tell they’ve taken off the reigns and now they’re making music by their own creative decisions.

If you were a fan of their previous work, their sound is completely different. Some of their older work had a pop country feel, reminiscent of the Dixie Chicks. Today, they have a more urban symphonic edge, combined with a little vocal a cappella soul, similar to the vocal style of En Vogue back in the early 90s.

In conjunction to Beu-tiful Vol. 1, expect to get a copy of Beu-tiful InVersions Vol. 1. This five song EP is a collection of the their same work from Vol., but a stripped version of the songs, which is a pleasant variation.

Keep an eye on their latest single and watch their music video, Definition of A Lady, directed by Nicholas Vedros. This song not only represents their new style music, but it gives you an idea where they’re headed as artists. The Beu Sisters grown up, sexy, and they sound better than ever.

Touch and Go with Stacy Clark: Live Interview at Hardrock Cafe

Four years old and running around while singing as her grandfather would play the accordion. This was the first stage for Stacy Clark.

Originally from Buffalo, NY, the singer-songwriter currently resides in Orange County with her newly wedded husband, Aaron. Now 30 years-old, Stacy has had an impressive career so far and its only just beginning.

Since her first EP in 2002 called, “Movement”, one in 2006 called, “Unusual”, and her latest release from 2010 called, “Connect The Dots”. Her music has also appeared on 20 television shows including The Hills, Engaged and Underaged, Girlfriends, and she’s been featured on MTV. Stacy has been nominated for 13 music awards, and she’s won 7 awards including Best Female Performer, Best Out of County Artist (Inland Empire Awards), and Best Pop.

One of Stacy’s most impressive accomplishments as an independent artist was the sale of her song, “White Lies” where she topped an impressive 420,000 downloads on iTunes, beating out Lady Gaga for sales in a single day [1].

No longer with Vanguard Records, Stacy is currently writing and working on a new music projects with a new band and some new songs for a brand new album that she will be self-releasing later this year or in 2012.

“It is a lot of hard work, but also very rewarding. I am at a very happy place right now,“ Stacy said.

"My Time" Interview and Music with Dancelife Metro with Mikey Jayy

"Life is a party if you love what you do," said Cyb Vee of Dancelife Metro.

With a vocal presents like that of Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys and delivering a style of music that crosses both electronic, Euro-tech, dance, and pop, Dancelife Metro hints a sound reminiscent of early techno of the early 90's all the way through today.

Having grown up in a small city of Kennewick, Washington, Cyb's desire to pursue a career in music wasn't something widely supported by his peers. Although Cyb's parents might have thought his passion was driven by madness, they support his dreams, giving him the needed motivation to release his self-titled debut CD.

This CD is a compilation of vocal and instrumental, which demonstrates Cyb's artistic vision beginning with his hit single, "Simple Thoughts". This track is not only a fan favorite, it is fit for the club scene delivering a mix of electronic high energy, house, and eurotech. The song speaks of discovery and not holding back on his ambitions and he understands what his calling is. Through this song, Cyb is expressing this need to reach out to the world.

Another song that shouts ambition and motivation is the song, "My Time". This song while it may appear cliché, it is one of the best songs on the album. This song is the ultimate expression of reaching the top and represents that no one is going to stop him, but his vision says he's already there. "My Time" is an anthem and a tribute to anyone who is held down from achieving their dreams and goals to go and get it and don't let anyone stop you and shout it out to the world.

"This is my time, thought you would like to know. Life is like a race, get ready set go. Take me some time, but I reached the top. I have crossed the line, I'm the cream of the crop. You're alive like a champion on top of the world. Reaching high to the sky and the rest of the world. Spreading messages of love and life, DJ turn up the music now."

Other notable songs include, "Distant Love", "Destiny", and "Keep On". A personal favorite of mine is not on his debut album, but a preview of his newest song was featured in our live interview called, "Groove Girl". This song is soon to be released on Dancelife Metro's sophomore album. Release date is unknown at this time. "Groove Girl" is an uptempo electronic dance song, about a girl in the club. Simple put, he wants to groove her on the dance floor.
