Part 1: Daylight - Interview with Breaking Day

The first part of this episode is an interview with a female quartet called, Breaking Day.

Breaking Day is an all female Pop / R&B group from Murrieta, CA.

Breaking Day’s debut album Daylight just dropped in April of 2012. The 14-track LP is without any disappointment. While it only took one year to recruit, record, and release their first full-length album, one might expect flaws, but surprisingly there is not. When you hear the entire album for the first time from beginning to end, you are both impressed and satisfied. Now, it is all about building a fan-base, touring, and gaining accolades from industry critics to validate their hardwork.

ABOUT BREAKING DAY

In March of 2011, their label Corporate Ballin held a Southern California area audition in search of four girls to come together and form an all girl group. The founder of Corporate Ballin didn’t want to just form just any girl group, but build an explosive collaboration of talent that would not only sound good, but entertain its viewers.

Founder of Corporate Ballin and Producer, Toma “Maskerade” Johnson decided to cut out the middleman and materialize his personal vision of what a female group should look and sound like. After weeks of auditioning, he decided upon four girls from the Inland Empire and San Diego areas to form the group known as Breaking Day.

WHO IS BREAKING DAY

The Front Girl is 21-year-old singer/songwriter and dancer, Nicole Garcia-Crisologo. Nicole wasn’t just meant for the part, she was bred for it. Since she was a small child, Nicole spent countless hours working on building her resume as an actress, a vocal singer, song writer, and appearing in musicals, so once she got the call to audition for Breaking Day, she was already posed for the position. In an instant, she was selected from dozens of applicants.

The tall brunette bombshell is Miranda Siegersma. When you see her perform, you’re not only captivated by her incredible vocals, but also by her unmistakable model like presence. Then suddenly you’re caught off guard when you discover, she’s the voice behind the rap lyrics. Miranda grew up in a small town outside of Temecula called Yucaipa, CA, but she also came from a long line of musician’s, so becoming a music artist wasn’t a tough decision nor was it discouraged. Having been inspired by the dance moves of Michael Jackson, she also developed a love for Hip Hop. With the addition of Miranda, she adds a whole dynamic to Breaking Day. Pay close attention to songs “Make It Through”, “Dangerous”, “Fire”, and “Have Dough”.

The third beauty is Gabriela Tristan, a young talented singer from San Diego, CA. While Nicole and Miranda sing most of the main vocals, Gabriela does play a distinct and vital role. Her distinct ability is carrying a smooth and long traveling note. Her voice is noticeable in songs like, “All Falls Down”, “Pretty Faces”, “Explanations”, and “Fire”. Whenever you hear a soft, but sultry voice, you’re hearing to Gabriela.

The fourth and final Breaking Day is Emily Pince. Also born and raised in San Diego, Emily is the blond of the crew and while she is not the front girl, she stands out more than all of the girls combined. She has a stage presence that is unmatched. She seems to strut her stuff and dances with more conviction. Perhaps she is the leader of the live stage. Maybe, her experience as a varsity cheer captain in High School had something to do with that.

AOEDE -

This week we are featuring 7 amazing artists including AOEDE as she released her brand new LP entitled Skeletons of the Muse. For AOEDE, you cannot tag her as a single genre artist, in fact, it is much harder to pin her down in one category, because her music is outside any realm of typical categories. Instead, put her in your "Popular" playlist and hit repeat often, because if you enjoy music by Regina Spektor, and Feist, Ingrid Michaelson then you will definitely enjoy AOEDE.

Beside Lights -

Other music, we have the song, "Afraid to Fall" by Beside Lights of Perth, Australia. If you've been watching Australia's Got Talent, then you know exactly who they are. They recently released their debut self-titled EP and having been a band for less than a year, they've done everything right within a short amount of time and the momentum continues to grow. If you like The Script and Coldplay, then they guys will fit right in with your playlist.

In Air -

Other music this week is a brand new track by the band, In Air with a song called, "Flipside". In Air was previously known as Nobody Gets Killed, but they felt their name held a negative connotation and did not reflect their sound. So after much debate, they changed their name. With songs like "Fire", "In Air", "The Fall", their name not only fits, but they are quickly becoming one of the most incredible bands you have never heard of.

Drunk Souls -

Even if you are not a fan of reggae, you will still enjoy the song, "Human Race" by Drunk Souls. Their entire collection of songs on their CD Revolution, is a collection of rather groovy songs that delivers catchy songs and hooks that draw you in. If you enjoyed the band UB40 back in the 80s, you will love Drunk Souls. With over 100,000 downloads of their debut LP, they have tapped into a market that is very much alive and for an indie band, this is a very difficult task to accomplish. They are proof you do not need to conform to the trends of American Pop in order to make a living.

Olg Prodeus -

“Can You Feel the Rain” by Oleg Prodeus is a featured song of the week, because the song exemplifies a perfect balance and harmony. The 13 is packed with intense songs that delivers a combination of adult contemporary, gothic, and rock rolled inside of one and after hearing the entire album, it was extremely difficult to just choose one. Francis Bowie -

A smile and two middle fingers is what you get from artist Francis Bowie of Copenhagen, Denmark...that is if you are a hater. "Sunny Day" by Francie Bowie is probably one of my favorite tracks off of his brand new self-titled, EP. Being anti-pop himself, his music is another one of those hard to label artist's within a single genre. While it's hard for record labels to market multi-genre artists, ultimately it is the fans that decide who buys the music. With Francis Bowie you get more for your money with a variety of eclectic sounds and audio art. With his song, "Wasting My Time", there is a hint of Depeche Mode influence, then you get to the song, "Endlessly". It is one of his more "Pop" singles off his EP. Then finally comes the song, "Silly and Crazy". Here's where I thought he sounds much like Jonathon Davis of KoRn meets The Cure. You just can't make this stuff up. You've got to hear it to believe it.

In Cages -

Perhaps my favorite of the week is the song, "Walk Away" by In Cages. When you incorporate a cellist in your band, you add a whole other dimension that would otherwise be unnoticed if you were used to any other form of electronic music. When it seems like everyone is trending towards dubstep, sometimes sticking with classical instruments is the best alternative. In Cages is categorized as an Indie Rock band and Alternative Rock band. If you are a fan of the 80s new wave rock and 90s grunge rock, then In Cages fits right in.

Welcome to episode 148! This week, we are bringing you some music new to the show, but we also have a major announcement. We are proud to announce that we are going to live with a brand new radio station under the designation, KGUP 106.5, which is due to launch this summer.

All the music we've been featuring on The Great Unknowns Presents, we will run on a 24/7 full time schedule and we'll be including The Great Unknowns Presents every Friday at Noon PST, plus we will be including some of our friends from other radio shows like Twitter Tuesday from Butterflies Radio and Cut N' Dry Talent Radio with Chris Kalt, Christina Gee, Ron E. Zell, and DJ Paul Mixer which airs every Sunday 8pm PST.

We are on schedule for a June 2012 release, but we may surprise everyone and launch sooner. Right now, we are working out the kinks to make sure it runs smooth.

In addition to a live radio station, we will have our own iPhone/iPad and Droid app, so you can take our show anywhere you go.

It's Dark Here: The Great Unknowns Presents LIVE, Ep 147

We have some great music for you by Forewalls, Beyond Conception, Canto, Eliza Neals, Nico Adams, Christine Oliver, and Melanie Taylor, but we are doing something a little different. We are honoring a person whose life was cut short.

We are starting off the show with a dedication to a talented guitarist, a friend, and a great person, Jason Tennies of Forewalls.

Jason’s life was cut short due to symptoms caused by a horrible disease called, schizophrenia. This disease attacked Jason with almost no warning and within days after his first episode, it tragically took his life.

In honor of his life, Jason’s mother, Linda started a foundation to help bring awareness and education about mental disorders including, schizophrenia, depression, bi-polar disorder, and autism called the Jason Tennies Memorial Foundation. Health organizations like the Autism Society, Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, Mental Health America, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, The Brain and Behavior Research Fund, San Bernardino County Department of Veterans Affairs all support the Foundation and its cause in order to help raise awareness.

This year, the Tennies’ are behind a film project currently in pre-production with the title taken from a song Jason wrote called, “It’s Dark Here.” The full-length feature film directed and produced by Joel Silver (The Matrix: Reload, The Matrix: Revolutions, Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows) is based on the final days of Jason Tennies' life with a focus on the disease and how doctors overlooked the seriousness and ultimately killed the 20-year-old. This disease and other related illnesses is often a subject that is often overlooked, but affects 1 out of 4 people, not just in the United States, but across the world.

Looking back, we went from a simple college radio show and podcast with less than 300 listeners to a core audience of over 200,000 iTunes and Zune subscribers and beating out Adam Carrolla for the No. 1 spot. Our radio show went to the big stage and hosted the first annual Artists In Music Awards with 8 live performances and gave away 23 awards in front of 1,300 people in Hollywood, CA.

While others claim to play today’s best independent music, we actually do. We brag, because it’s true. You won’t hear some hack with a cheap computer program and a microphone. What you would expect to hear on popular radio stations and your favorite video channel is exactly what you’ll hear on this show, except you’ve never heard of these people. So when we say "we play the best music from the independent music scene,"... damn it! We mean it!

This week, I wrote a review about Mimi Page. In this weeks episode, we personally selected music that would compliment each song from one to the next.

Not only do we have music from Mimi Page's brand new CD, Breathe Me In, we also have unreleased music by Max and the Moon. For nearly a year, Max and the Moon has been in hiatus from performing, but not on hiatus from creating music. In actuality, they've been working hard in the studio to create their new CD which is due to be released on Tuesday, March 27, 2012.

Electric Dance Music Special with DJ Nate Wilson, Ep 144

DJ Nate Wilson is an EDM (Electronic Dance Music) Artist hailing from Orange County, CA. Yes, he is a Disc Jockey, but his style is more directed on the dance side. Combine dubstep, trance house, and a hint of mainstream sounds and you have the recipe for Nate Wilson.

Influenced by Tiesto, Kaskade, DeadMau5, and various local DJ’s, Nate was inspired to create his own music and has been mixing music for nearly four years, but is a new comer on the production side with just under two years experience under his belt. While his modest character will not boast about his skill, his boasts are on the turntable. With He has proven to be one of the most talented DJ’s of today and he was recently recognized for it.

With the support of his fans and the judging committee of the 2012 Artist In Music Awards, Nate was honored for the title of Best Disc Jockey and took home his first ever trophy in front of a crowd of over 1,200 people at Key Club in Hollywood on February 10, 2012.

Welcome to our 143rd episode of the The Great Unknowns Presents. We are coming up on our 3rd year and we have a lot to celebrate in the coming weeks. What started out as a college podcast show to inform people of new and upcoming bands, has turned into a popular radio show on KGUP 106.5FM. We got our first syndication in Miami, FL at Butterflies Radio. A lot of great things have happened, including our first ever Artists In Music Awards ceremony which was a successful live stage showcase and awards event. Nearly 1,400 people attended our first award show and we could not be happier with the massive turn out.

I cannot thank you enough for listening to us and following our progress throughout the years. If you're new to this show, then you are in for a treat. No one else plays better music than we do. I'm not just saying that, our rankings prove it. Each week, we are in the top 10 for best podcast/radio show...in the world! We were #1 in 2011 and we plan on continuing that tradition for years to come.

Blunt Force Trauma: Interview with Max of Cavalera Conspiracy, Ep 132

Two of the more influential artists in the world of thrash and acid metal back in the 1980’s were brothers, Max and Igor Cavalera. Max founded the band Sepultura, a Brazilian Metal band in 1984, and for nearly three decades, they rocked Brazil, Europe, Australia, and the rest of the world.

On August 16, 1996, while Sepultura was on the Monsters of Rock tour with band like Ozzy Osbourne, Paradise Lost, Type O Negative, Biohazard, and Fear Factory, Max heard the news of his step-son’s death and abruptly left the tour to be with his family. This was the beginning of the end with Sepultura for Max. A year later, Max was back on stage, but it was with a new band, Soulfly.

After ten years of silence, Max got a call from Igor and they found themselves working together again. On August 17, 2006 during the 10th Annual D-Low Memorial show, Max reunited with his brother Igor, whom had not been on stage together since 1996. They played some of their originals written for Sepultura.
Max said that Soulfly is still very much an active band, will be releasing their 9th studio album in spring of 2012 and will also go on tour beginning in Australia.

In 2007, Max created another band called Inflikted. Max and Iggor decided on a new name that represented their family and called it, Cavalera Conspiracy. This new band was a newer sound, which Max describes as his “roots” of metal, a “super metal” as he called it, that combines the sound of 80’s trash and death metal and the modern sound of today’s metalcore. Their debut album, “Inflikted” was released through Road Runner Records in 2008 and in their first week, ranked No. 72 on the Billboard 200 and ranked even better in countries like Australia, Finland, Austria, Belgium, and Germany.

Early 2011 was the release of Cavalera’s sophomore album entitled, “Blunt Force Trauma”, an in your face metal album that digs deep into one of Max Cavalera’s favorite topics, and that is his love for history. Songs like Genghis Khan, Warlord, Burn Waco, and Rasputin were influenced by his love for history. Events in history were his inspiration for his lyrics. Knowing the background of a band’s story behind the music and the reason for their lyrics, but it also gives the artist a new found respect.

Cavalera Conspiracy ended their 2011 tour in November, but this is not the end. During the off season, Max and Igor will be hard at work writing new material and will be headed back in the studio for their new album sometime in 2012.

The Other Side: LIVE Interview with NotForgotten

Welcome to Episode 131!

Located out of Holgate, Ohio, NotForgotten is Frontman - Kevin Leach, Drummer - Brandon Tijerina, Bassist -Danny Leach, and newest member and Guitarist – Adam Delaplane.

A lot has happened since my last interview with Notforgotten back in 2009. Since then, NotForgotten has undergone a lot of changes including the new addition of guitarist, Adam. Not only have they expanded, they’re sound has matured and transformed from something that was forgettable, to a something absolutely worth remembering.

One of their fan favorites off the new EP entitled, The Other Side, is a song called, “You’ve Got Someone to Hold You”. They had an idea to release this song on Valentines Day, and boy, it turned out to be the best idea thus far. Not only is it one of the best songs, it surprisingly caught a lot of attention and has catapulted their popularity and has grown their fanbase.

While this EP is only four songs in length, it is but a sample of what’s to come. The band has been traveling across country and they’re headed to Los Angeles to shoot their first music video. And, they are nominated for Best Rock Band and Best Pop Artist.
