Gabe Lopez CD Release of "Shine Like the Sun" interview with Mikey Jayy, Ep 118
Clean
July 19, 2011 11:38 AM PDT
itunes pic

Gabe Lopez is a Pop Rock / Dance artist from Los Angeles, CA. He's not just a singer, but he's an excellent writer and producer. Gabe has worked with several indie and well known and artists and he had a rare opportunity to write a few songs exclusively for James Brown. Unfortunately, Brown died and the song may never get released, but hopefully it will.

Working behind the scenes in the television and music industry, Gabe Lopez has been able to pursue a long life passion and that's to release his own music. In 2008, Gabe release his first album entitled, "This is About You", but his true talent is revealed in his album just released today called, Shine Like the Sun

Shine Like the Sun, not only sounds better engineered, it reflects Gabe's maturity as a developed artist.  Songs like "Boomerang" with it's club flare, he also gives his listeners a variety, including my personal favorite, "Into the Sun" for the orchestra ensemble quality, which show he's risen above sounding like other artists and honed in on his own identity. The song that really impressed me was, "No Hate". Just like the title, the song reflects the frustration related to Proposition 8 and how it generated so much hate against the LGBT community. Gabe Lopez was asked to write a song that represented their peaceful movement against a law that promoted hate disguised as "family values".  Not only is it an entertaining song, it shows that he is also a gifted writer.

Listen to special live CD release interview with Gabe Lopez on The Great Unknowns Presents. Hear exclusive music only heard on this show.

Songs on the show include: "Boomerang", "No Hate", "Masquerade", and "Saboteur".

Mikey Jayy of The Great Unknowns Presents heads to Basal, Switzerland to interview rock band, Deer Park Avenue.

Featured on KOVR Good Day Sacramento and several radio stations, Deer Park Avenue has a sound that fits somewhere in between Green Day, Collective Soul, and Paramore. Unlike a lot of indie bands that tend to sound like everyone else and feel repetitive, Deer Park Avenue’s edgy pop rock sound keeps it light and fun, and they stay away from the category of drab or dull.

LIVE Interview with Casino: "Sainte Rose"
Clean
June 15, 2011 11:13 AM PDT

Casino is a four-man Power-Pop / Rock band with Joey Berlangieri, Marc Gebrayel, Corey Biondi, and Michael

Inside the province of Quebec and just outside of Montreal is a city called. Laval. Coincidentally the city of Laval’s has a motto, “Unity, Progress, and Greatness”. This motto firmly defines the Laval local band, Casino

Casino is a four-man Power-Pop / Rock band with Joey Berlangieri, Marc Gebrayel, Corey Biondi, and Michael Berlangieri. Formed in 2008, this band didn’t spur from out of nowhere into a sensation right away, instead they started as most bands do, which was an idea, dedication, combined with hard work.

Initially, it started out with a lighthearted idea with Joey and Marc wanting to create music purely for fun. Later on, they discovered they wanted more and collaborated with the further idea of starting an actual band. This led to the addition of Joey’s younger brother and drummer, Michael. Later came Cory on bass.

Together with their intense desire to write songs and create great music that would inspire their listeners, they managed to fuse a sound that crosses comparison with The Killers, The Bravery, and Blonde Redhead.

On June 16 is the official release of Casino’s release of “Sainte Rose” EP and the release of their first music video for the song “Graceful” directed and produced by Jimmi Francoeur. "Sainte Rose" is a six track CD featuring songs like, “Graceful”, ‘Funeral”, “Apple Shaped Heart”, and “Goodbye”.  These four songs are available to listen to in their entirety with an exclusive interview with Joey, Marc, Corey, and Michael live on The Great Unknowns Presents and All Indie Magazine

Combining Dance and Electro with Soul: Meet Elle Vee
Clean
June 10, 2011 08:32 AM PDT

Welcome to episode 112!

Introducing Elle Vee. Elle's an extremely talented 21-year-old singer/songwriter from Northridge, CA. Ranging from a cross genre style of Dance meets Electro meets R&B and Pop Rock, Elle Vee is definitely an artist to keep an eye on.

Elle Vee didn't just come out of nowhere. Very skilled on the piano, Elle Vee is also a talented writer that began at the age of 11. Not only does Elle write songs for herself, she also writes for other recording artists.

So, who does this beautiful starlet sound like? There are so many qualities about Elle Vee's new music that compares her to several major artists and other fellow indie artists like Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, and indie sensation LIGHTS and Audrianna Cole. Some of Elle Vee's newest music includes, "I Like Girls", "Midnight Lover", "The Enemy", and "Translator" which are all songs that mainstream lacks. Like these tracks, all her music is well produced, composed, and performed, more importantly these songs should be trending modern pop culture because they are that good.

With that said, Elle Vee is not just your typical dance and party only music artist, in fact she has a ballad feature that is hard to ignore. Songs that stand out are "Playing with Fire", "Lost in Lust", and one of course my personal favorites,"Don't Wait". Elle's poses a voice that has a soft and tender vulnerability to it that lures and captivates your senses.

Interview with Joy Valencia: "Waking the Lion"
Clean
May 05, 2011 08:02 PM PDT
itunes pic

Joy Valencia is a talented singer/songwriter originally from a Chicago, IL. Joy attended college in Boston, MA where she met her husband who is also her co-writer and co-producer. Currently, they live in Los Angeles were they released her self-title debut EP.

Maybe it is due to her Farfisa electric organ in the song, “Don’t Wak the Lion”, but Joy’s music is a unique mixture of psychedelic melodies of today tied in with retro 1960’s “Psychedelic Era” pop music. The late 60’s brought upon a music era unlike no other time in history. It was a period when music was at a brink of incredible change and it brought about a nation of “togetherness”. Music from artists like, Sweetwater, The Chocolate Watch Band, Fifty Foot Hose, The Mamas & The Papas, and of course The Beatles were most popular of the time. Some of Joy’s direct influences for her music are unmistakable with her inspiration by artists like The Zombies, The Beatles, The Association, Shirley Bassey, & Donovan.

In her songs, “If You Love Me”, there are other hints of contemporary Jazz. With the song, “It’s a Beautiful Day” there are distinct hints of Cabaret from the late 1920’s. No matter which era Joy tried to capture, it works and makes Joy Valencia one of the most intriguing music artists of the year and I look forward to more music by the talented artist.

Currently on their Reckless & Relentless worldwide tour, Asking Alexandria made a tour stop in Los  Angeles. I got a one-on-one interview with the band, so please listen in and check out music from Stand Up and Scream and Reckless and Relentless right here on The Great Unknowns Presents

Read the full CD review on All Indie Magazine

Originating from North Yorkshire, England, metal/synthcore band Asking Alexandria has previously released one full CD Stand Up and Scream, an EP, Life Gone Wild, and debuting April 5th is their latest full length LP, Reckless and Relentless.

When Asking Alexandria’s originally released their debut album, Stand Up and Scream in September of 2009, their hollowing screams, bellowing growls, crashing guitars, and electro-tech laced music just felt like it could not get any better, but their newest CD proved me wrong. In fact, they “killed” it.

Just as they started Stand Up and Scream, Reckless and Relentless begins with a building interlude that immediately draws the listener in, then comes “Dear Insanity” that nearly rips your face off with ripping cords played by Ben Bruce, Cameron Liddell, and Sam Bettley and machine-gun drum-kicking from James Cassells.

Music in this episode include, “A Prophecy”, “Alerion”, “The Final Episode”, and “Morte et Dabo”.

Combining modern ambient and electro tones with a touch of retro synth-pop of the mid-80’s, comes Mark Alan of Alphanaut.

The best way to describe the listening experience of Alphanaut is like traveling through a space-time continuum with visualizations through music. Some may refer to this as psychedelic rock or even avant-garde synth, music that was popular among artists like Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Art of Noise, and Enigma. Creatively, Alphanaut is much more complex and combines some of each to create a whole new style.

Nikki Forova is a Pop singer/songwriter that compares to the likes of Vanessa Carlton, Imogen Heap, Tori Amos, and Regina Spektor.

In October of 2010, Nikki entered and won the MTV Duets contest out of thousands of entries. After a private visit from a representative of MTV, Nikki was flown out to New York for a rare opportunity engagement to perform the song, “A Thousand Miles” with Vanessa Carlton herself and was aired on MTV television show, "MTV Duets".

Her craftsmanship on the piano is more than just elegant. Songs like “Sky Writer” and “Revving Wings” grasp that inner feeling of intense emotion. The combination of Nikki’s powerful vocals serene musical melody, especially in “After Today” and “Little Green Piece of Life” capture such intense feelings of incredible beauty, that it feels like falling in love. That’s putting it lightly.

Music like this is very powerful and every song from the Revving Wings CD is worth owning.

Out of nowhere, comes this R&B / Dance singer & songwriter named Darnell Wright. Wrights brings some of today's best dance beats and club music meant for the club scene.

Don't judge his lyrics for lack of depth, but respect his music for what it was intended for...the club scene. As shallow as some song lyrics may appear, Wrights lyrics are very catchy and are not cheesy at all. In fact, his music is so catchy, you want to chant and sing every song long after it’s been played.

With the collaborations with Nala Gold and Miss P on tracks including, “For The USA & UK”, “Last Call”, “Level 1 Girl”, and “I.M.A.” makes for one of the most enjoyable current new R&B / Dance albums of the year.
